Background: General Wiki Info / Sequel Wiki Info
In the mountains of China, there was a Buddhist monastery headed by Koumyou Sanzo, one of the top priests in the religion. One day, he was walking along the river and spotted a baby floating in it. He took the child back with him to Kinzan Temple and named him Kouryuu, in homage to the Yangtze.
Kouryuu grew up in the monastic life, with Koumyou acting as a father to him, much to the dismay of the other monks. They openly criticized him, as it was inconceivable that a kid could be so close to their beloved priest. Kouryuu didn’t have any close relationships with any of the other monks, except for one of the teachers, a young man named Shuuei.
When Kouryuu was 13, Koumyou summoned him to his chambers one rainy night. There, he bestowed upon the boy his official Buddhist title, naming him Genjyo Sanzo and making him Koumyou’s successor. During that meeting, a youkai (a member of a race of demons in their world) broke into the room and killed Koumyou as he shielded young Genjyo. This meant that both of the Tenchi Kaigen sutras that Koumyou was in charge of became Genjyo’s.
However, the youkai made off with the Seiten Sutra, leaving only the Maten Sutra behind. With only 5 of these sutras existing in the world, Genjyo immediately took off from the temple, determined to retrieve the holy item and get revenge for his master’s death.
After wandering in the wilderness for four years, the now 17 year old Sanzo reached the city of Chang’An (present day Xi’an, China), and took up residence in Keiun Temple. The monks there, delighted to have such a high ranking figure to make them look good, sought to keep him as a figurehead, hoping he’d be complacent enough to stay.
At this point, Sanzo was no longer the sarcastic pre-teen he’d been before Koumyou’s death, and his sullen melancholy was only broken by his constant nightmares where he relieved the tragic incident. During Sanzo's first few weeks at the new temple, he kept to himself and barely interacted with anyone, except for the head priest, an elderly man named Jikaku. Sanzo would take walks at night and Jikaku would always meet him somewhere, smoking a cigarette and trying to give him advice, which Sanzo ignored.
Then, a group of youkai stormed the temple, looking for Sanzo, as he'd killed one of their friends. Jikaku took the fall for Sanzo and was killed while the priest looked on. Furious, Sanzo took down all the youkai, claiming that he'd no longer allow anyone to clean up after him. This was also when he began smoking, taking the pack of Marlboro that Jikaku had left behind. The night after Jikaku's death, Sanzo began hearing a voice, calling out for him. He was troubled because Koumyou had told him that he too had heard a voice, one that ended up helping him find the baby Kouryuu in the river. At the time, Kouryuu had declared that if he ever heard such a voice, he would find the owner and smack him as hard as he could.
A year or so down the road, Sanzo could no longer take the sound of the voice. He tracked it to a mountain where legend told of a monster that was imprisoned at the top. He dismissed the story and climbed up anyway.
There was someone in a stone cage when Sanzo reached the top of the mountain... but it appeared to be a young boy. He freed the boy, named Goku, from the cage and immediately, was jumped by bandits. Goku made quick work of them, surprising Sanzo with his speed and strength, and then Sanzo took Goku back to the temple, where he promised to start looking into finding parents for the boy.
Goku, however, took an almost instant attachment to Sanzo, even panicking when Sanzo didn't show up one evening, thinking the priest had abandoned him. He accidentally ripped off a golden diadem that encircled his head, turning him into some kind of feral animal, and rampaged through the temple, until Sanzo was able to stop him and replace the object, which he realized was a youkai power limiter.
After speaking to the Sanbutsushin (The Three Buddhist Aspects), Sanzo discovered that Goku was actually the famed Monkey King of Legend, Seiten Taisei Son Goku. He had lost his memories, however, and didn't remember what he had been punished for or why he had been locked away. Goku stayed with Sanzo at the temple until they left for their journey.
Once Sanzo had been at the temple for three years, he was summoned again by the Sanbutsushin, who gave him the assignment of apprehending a mass murderer named Cho Gonou. Gonou had killed over 1000 youkai in search of his kidnapped lover, and legends told that if a human killed 1000 demons, they too would become a demon. Gonou was too dangerous to remain at large. Even though Sanzo thought that as a priest, he shouldn’t be interfering in criminal justice, he did as he was told.
Sanzo and Goku found Gonou hiding out in the house of a half-demon named Sha Gojyo, and proceeded to get into a physical fight with him to get to Gonou. This resulted in Gonou running off to return to the fortress of the youkai Hyakugan Maou, where his fiancée had been killed and he had killed all the youkai in revenge. Sanzo chanted at the remains of the fortress and Gonou agreed to return to the temple with him, eventually changing his name to Hakkai and voluntarily serving Sanzo.
At the age of 24, Sanzo received his next assignment. Youkai had been going mad across the land, in an event that was known as the Minus Wave. Victims hit with the Minus Wave lost their minds and began to attack humans, and the already uneasy relations between humans and youkai became even more strained. The source of the event was traced to Houtou Castle, where the great Demon King Gyuumaou had been sealed thousands of years earlier. It was believed that Gyuumaou’s family and subjects were attempting to free him, and were doing so by trying to collect all five of the Tenchi Kaigen sutras. One of the sutras they had already collected happened to be the one that belonged to Koumyou Sanzo.
Genjyo Sanzo, along with Goku, Hakkai, and Gojyo, were ordered to go west to India and retrieve the sutras, along with stopping Gyuumaou from being resurrected. Along the their journey, they encountered hordes of youkai armies, powerful enemies of humans and demons, and treacherous terrain and harsh weather conditions. The Sanzo Party’s brutal takedown of all opponents in their path has earned them a fearsome reputation, and all of the youkai under the Castle’s control now seek to take them out.
A common foil for the Sanzo Team is the demon prince Kougaiji, son of Gyuumaoh. He and his friends are ordered to stop Sanzo at any cost and take his sutra, but Kougaiji prides himself on honor and fairness, and will only battle the Sanzo party when he feels the odds are balanced.
One other major enemy that nearly halted the journey was a man only known as “Kami-sama,” or “God.” He was a heretical Sanzo, who had no sutra, and had convinced two young youkai to kill in his name, for his amusement. When he had no more use for the young boys, he killed them. Gojyo sought revenge on Kami-sama for the boys, and Sanzo and the others eventually followed. Kami-sama soundly defeated them and took Sanzo’s sutra as a prize. Once the four recovered from their extensive injuries, they fought him once more, realizing he was just a child trying to make his master happy. They knew someone was behind Kami-sama, and had been behind several of the enemies they faced, but the party was unsure of who exactly it was.
Later on in their journey, the Sanzo Party ran into what appeared to be reanimated human bodies, chanting "Kill the Youkai!" and trying to fight Goku, Gojyo, and Hakkai. The reanimated bodies were distinguished by their unnatural yellow eyes. Upon entering the closest town, the group heard of a traveling holy man who could bring the dead back to life. His name was Bishop Hazel Grouse, and he had come from the West to cleanse the world of youkai with his bodyguard, Gato.
Hazel became fascinated with Sanzo upon meeting him, much to the other man's dismay. Hazel began to follow the p arty in their journey, claiming that they could work together to wipe the youkai off the planet. Hazel exorcised demons by using a pendant around his neck to steal souls, and then he used these souls to bring the bodies of recently deceased humans back to life.
In a town where Hazel had brought numerous citizens back to life, the Sanzo Party began to question their own beliefs about his practice. Gojyo and Hakkai decided that they didn't want to bring anyone in their past back to life, while Goku assured Sanzo that, if he were killed, he wouldn't want to come back.
As soon as Goku says this, he falls to the ground in a bloody mess, covered in wounds. Sanzo becomes enraged and takes off, searching for the attacker. Meanwhile, Gojyo and Hakkai come across Goku and try to heal him, but his wounds are too severe. Hakkai decides the only way for Goku to survive is to remove his limiter and hope he heals faster. They do so and end up having to face down a nearly unstoppable youkai.
Sanzo doesn't discover who shot Goku and returns to see Hakkai, in his youkai form, fighting Goku, and both nearly die in the process. He takes off, leaving Gojyo to deal with the aftermath. The group is split up: Gojyo, Goku, and Hakkai in one, and Sanzo, Hazel, and Gato in the other. Sanzo barely tolerates Hazel following him, and still considers himself to be going it alone.
Sanzo demands that Hazel tell him how he knew about Goku's form as Seiten Taisei, and Hazel says that when he was a child, a man came from the East to visit his mast er. This man's name was Ukoku Sanzo. Genjyo Sanzo knows that name, as Ukoku was a friend of Koumyou's who visited frequently. Ukoku has also been biding his time as Nii Jenyi, one of the scientists in the Gyuumaoh revival project.
Almost as soon as Hazel finishes, Ukoku Sanzo appears, dressed in black robes and determined to play with "Koumyou's boy." They fight, and Genjyo is clearly outmatched, and after being severely injured, is on the verge of being deleted from existence. Ukoku does this by removing his target from the memories of everyone who ever knew them.
At the last second, the rest of the party arrives, deciding that they can’t leave Sanzo on his own. Gojyo and Goku yank Sanzo out of battle, and Hakkai attempts to heal him, even though almost every bone in his body is broken. The other three decide to take on Ukoku while Sanzo heals.
Personality: Upon first meeting Sanzo, one gets the impression that he is rude, coarse, and irritable. When approached by strangers, he bluntly tells them that he's not interested in their problems, that he doesn't care what anyone else does, and will probably throw a few curse words in there for good measure.
This tough outer shell was developed as a result of enduring a great loss at a young age and being thrust into a brutal, cruel world. Right after the death of Koumyou Sanzo, when Sanzo was wandering, he found himself accosted by youkai bandits. In addition to attempting to steal from him, they also threatened to sexually assault him. Sanzo killed them in self defense, but the lives he took that night would be the first of many. He decided then that he would have to be reserved and emotionless if he wanted to survive.
As he grew from a teenager to an adult, Sanzo developed an intense dislike of others. Whether it was another religious figure wanting to get closer to him for his title, or a drunk man commenting on his fair features and attempting to grope him, no one was to be trusted. He became outwardly terse with everyone, building walls to keep them out.
Sanzo believes strongly in the Buddhist philosophy of "Muichimotsu" (Hold Nothing), and it became his mantra for nonattachment. Even when meeting Goku, Gojyo, and Hakkai, who would later become his traveling companions, Sanzo held them at arms' length and would emphatically deny that they were his friends. The only definition he would give them at the beginning of their journey was that they were his "servants."
Still, having Goku depend on him allowed Sanzo to become a stern protective figure. Hakkai's intelligence provided an outlet for Sanzo to have deeper, more philosophical discussions, as well as a counselor to share some of his darker moments with. Even Gojyo, with his rough background, allows Sanzo to be more sarcastic and snarky, as well as have a partner to indulge his tobacco and alcohol vices.
Sanzo would never admit it outloud, but knowing the other three has slowly eroded the wall he'd built to keep himself safe, and he finds himself missing them when they are not there, and even inconveniencing himself to go save one of them if they are in trouble. His role in the group has evolved into the one who tells you how much he doesn't care about any of them, while on his way to rescue them.
Abilities: A Sanzo is the highest ranking priest in Buddhism, and as such, he has several powerful spiritual abilities. He can create seals and wards by writing down specific protection spells. However, his most powerful form of attack uses his Maten Sutra. By chanting the Lotus Sutra, he unleashes a powerful banishing spell called Makai Tenjo, which can disintegrate youkai and “purify” them. When he uses the attack, the Sutra unfurls into impossibly long tendrils and can obliterate everything within the attack area.
In addition to these, Sanzo is also extremely proficient with his handgun. He is extremely accurate, enough to hit the smallest of targets. He is also a quick draw, and can fire off rounds at great speeds. On the less lethal side, he’s a good hit with his fan. His most frequent targets are Gojyo and Goku.
Despite being a formidable opponent in battle, Sanzo is the only human of the group, and as such is vulnerable to large amounts of physical damage. He also tends to get sick more often than his demon companions.
Alignment: Daimonia. Despite it being over a decade, Sanzo still grieves for the loss of his master and father-figure. It permeates everything that he says and does, and he tries to cover up that sadness by being angry and irritable. Rarely does he allow himself to experience true joy.
Other: Nothing at this time!

Intro Log Prompt A:
Sadly, Sanzo was pretty much used to people staring at him wherever he went. Either it was because they recognized him as a high ranking religious figure, or because they were attempting to hit on him, and neither of those scenarios were something he looked forward to.
He could feel their eyes on him as he walked around, trying to look purposeful, but increasingly feeling pissed off that he was apparently some sort of spectacle to these people. He could almost feel the vein in his forehead start throbbing.
Had they never seen a human before? Were their eyes broken? What was wrong with them? His thoughts continued to build, and he found it more difficult to concentrate on where he was going. It was almost like his vision was darkening, making his path even less certain.
Sanzo stopped, blinked a few times, looked up, and then realized what was going on. There was a literal dark cloud hovering above his head. It seemed to roil every time he narrowed his eyes or sighed in frustration. Was that why everyone was staring at him like he'd escaped from a freak show?
"What the fuck," he muttered under his breath, and that only seemed to make things worse. The cloud actually emitted some sort of rumbling sound, and just as Sanzo rolled his eyes, the cloud opened up and started pouring rain.
"Shit goddamn fucking hell on a fucking-" The curses tumbled out involuntarily, and he looked quite a sight, trying to escape a cloud that determinedly hovered over him. Some of the bystanders were even trying to conceal their snickering.
The cloud fed on his anger and discomfort, which only made Sanzo more pissed off, creating an endless cycle where it rained more and he got angrier and angrier. He was now completely soaked, and like a cat caught in a downpour, his scowl looked like it was permanently etched onto his face.
Woe unto the first person to run into him in this state...
